Understanding Big Feelings

Why Kids Get Loud and What to Do

By Twin Bears Studio

Sometimes children express their emotions in big ways—shouting, crying, or saying things they don’t truly mean. These outbursts are often their way of coping with strong feelings like anger or frustration when they haven’t yet developed the skills to manage them calmly.

As adults, it’s important to stay steady and not take the volume personally. Instead, we can help children learn that while all emotions are okay, there are safer and kinder ways to express them.

What you can do:

  • Validate the feeling: “I can see you’re upset.”

  • Set gentle boundaries: “It’s okay to feel angry, but hitting isn’t okay.”

  • Offer calming strategies: Deep breathing, squeezing a pillow, or taking a quiet break.

  • Help them name the feeling once they’ve calmed down.

At Twin Bears Studio, our books and resources help children explore their emotions and build emotional awareness through storytelling and play—nurturing empathy, resilience, and connection along the way.
